How can I help the environment in my every day life?

With COP26 taking place and climate change being in the media such a lot at the moment, it's easy to feel a little overwhelmed about what's happening to our planet.  Here’s 5 ways you can have a positive impact on the environment and become more green:

Stop Using Single Use Plastic & Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

Anything we can do to stop the millions of tonnes of plastic used in the UK each year from ending up in landfill or the sea is a good thing for the environment.  Recycling is something that we're all familiar with these days and many of us now re-use our shopping bags rather than buying harmful plastic ones each time we shop, or take a re-useable cup when we go out for a coffee, but not everything is recyclable of course.  Thinking about what happens to the things we buy after we've finished with them, or the packaging these items come in can help us to make better choices and is another thing that we can all do to reduce waste and be more sustainable.  That’s why saying no to single use plastic which pollutes our world and harms wildlife is so important.

Start Composting

Creating your own compost is easy to do, great for the garden and also reduces waste.  Alternatively use your council ‘green bin’, follow their guidelines on what can be added, but this usually includes garden waste and fruit & vegetable peelings.

Support Eco-Friendly Businesses (like ours)

As consumers we have purchasing power, so let’s use it to support companies that are doing their bit to help protect the environment.  They might, like us, use sustainable natural ingredients in their products and design their packaging to be eco-friendly.  At Beautiful Ethical all our packaging is either recyclable, biodegradable or compostable, or it could be re-used to send another package!  Many eco-friendly companies like ours use a portion of their proceeds to support environmental action; through Ecologi we plant trees each month and contribute towards climate positive projects around the world.  You can visit our virtual forest here beautiful ethical | Ecologi

Plant Trees & Attract Wildlife To Your Garden

We plant trees every month around the world, but have you considered planting a tree in your garden?  Trees absorb carbon dioxide which is good for the environment, but they’re also part of attracting wildlife and there’s a tree suitable for every sized garden!  Trees can also help to prevent flooding and are excellent for keeping nutrients in the soil.  Other ways to make your garden more attractive to wildlife is to add plants that attract pollinators such as bees and other insects, these little creatures are vital in ensuring a sustained food chain.  Why not leave a ‘wild patch’ or sprinkle some wild flower seeds in a corner of your garden, it will quickly become a hive of activity.

Think About Your Diet

You might have heard that meat accounts for almost 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production.  Replacing some of your meals with more plant-based options is not only good for your health, but is one way that you can directly influence the environment in a positive way.
